The Area

The Lizard Peninsula is all about big skies and dramatic coastline. But it’s also home to numerous salty fishing villages and coves – Cadgwith, Mullion, Kynance and of course, Church Cove.

Church Cove is a small beach, peppered by rock pools at low tide and with views of the original Lizard lighthouse. Walking up from the cove itself, where the old lifeboat station still sits, cottages border the lane leading to St Wynwallow’s church, Britain’s southernmost church and the oldest part of which is 12th Century. Noel Coward was said to have composed his famous song ‘A Room with a View’ in Church Cove, where he apparently spent the happiest of times.

The Lizard Peninsula entire boasts a wealth of extraordinary beaches – both stone and sand, including world famous Kynance Cove and Poldhu Beach with it’s lovely beach cafe – all easily explored via the South West Coast path, England's longest waymarked long-distance footpath and a National Trail stretching for 630 miles.

Helston (10 miles), Falmouth (20 miles) and Truro, the capital of Cornwall and home to the magnificent Truro Cathedral (27 miles) are within striking distance of Church Cove for major amenities and rail links. The National Maritime Museum at Falmouth is particularly worthy of a visit and is handily located opposite Rick Stein’s ‘Fish’ restaurant. Around 40 minutes’ drive (26 miles) to the northwest coast of Cornwall is St Ives Bay, the small town with a long history of nurturing incredible artists, home to wonderful restaurants and Tate St Ives.
